As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” (Luke 21:1-4 NIV)
When I read the story of the widow in Luke 21:1-4, it hits me that God deserves more than just flashy gestures and empty words. He deserves our everything, not just the stuff that looks good on the surface. It's about giving God every last bit of who we are because that's one of the highest forms of worship. So, what’s left to give? Our whole, authentic selves.
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging...10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (Psalms 46:1-3, 10-11 NIV)
Let’s be real: the world can be a scary place, and I think we can all agree on that. Every day, there's something new to worry about, and it's made worse because we have the news at our fingertips 24/7. Just knowing there's trouble here, there, and everywhere can shake even the strongest of us. But here’s the silver lining: God is our refuge and strength. No matter how much the world seems to be falling apart, Jesus is still king.
When my mind starts to spiral and anxiety tries to take over, I remind myself to just “be still.” God’s got this. We always joke about being passenger princesses, but there’s something comforting about knowing that God is in the driver’s seat. We just need to be still and trust that everything’s okay because He says so.
3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. 4 In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? (Psalms 56:3-4 NIV)
Much of my relationship with God as an adult has been rooted in learning to trust. Deep down, I'm naturally skeptical of everything and, let's be real, kinda scared too. Scared of bugs, scared of not being enough, scared that the worst-case scenario is lurking around every corner. But guess what? That's not the life God wants for us. Living in fear just keeps us from truly living. Fear is like hitting the pause button on life. So, why not hand over the keys to God and cruise with the confidence that there’s nothing to fear? Because with God, we’re already winning.
