Reflections from The Bible in 52 Weeks by Dr. Kimberly Moore

GraceNotes - My Reflections

“Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord’s command.”

1 Kings 11:10 NIV

Disobedience will get you caught up, called out, and cast apart from the will of God. Every. Clap. Single. Clap. Time. Clap. When I read through 1 Kings, I can't help but notice how God would appoint a king and give them super clear instructions. But at the heart of it all, the main message was, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and strength, and don't stray from that.”

My mama always said, “When you know better, you do better,” but she’d add, “When you don’t do better, even when you know what’s right, the consequences are based on what you know in your heart.”

Think of the Bible as the ultimate blueprint. When you get to know it, you get to know God and what He expects of you. So, it shouldn't be a shocker when, if you turn away from His word and disobey, He’ll put you on pause until you get your heart right.

“For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.”

1 Kings 17:16 NIV

“Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.”

1 Kings 19:5-8 NIV

You know there's nothing like a good meal to either give you a solid nap or strengthen you for the road ahead. The Bible totally gets this, harping on the importance of bread and rest. In 1 Kings alone, we see two amazing stories of God providing bread.

First, there's the widow who gave her last bit of flour to Elijah, and God blessed her with endless provisions. Then there's Elijah on the run, where an angel of the Lord urged him to eat to gain strength. These stories are so powerful!

Now, let’s get into the symbolism. The oil represents the Holy Spirit, and the flour represents Jesus. Together, they make bread that is eternal. Jesus is the bread of life we need to keep going in both hard times and good times. He is our sustenance, our cup that overflows, providing us not only with the food we need through His word but also the rest we need by taking on our burdens and cares.

Imagine, in those moments of divine provision, the bread was really Jesus in the flesh, strengthening Elijah and fortifying him for the journey ahead. It’s a beautiful reminder that Jesus nourishes our souls and gives us the strength to face anything.

So, let's remember to turn to the bread of life, Jesus, who sustains us and gives us rest. He’s our ultimate source of strength and peace.
